Positive Reinforcers and Negative Reinforcers

I have a classmate that presented this question; “How is it that a “positive reinforcement” will teach the child or person not to repeat the wrong behavior.”

Personally I thought using a “negative reinforcement” was needed in this case to teach the child or person not to repeat the wrong behavior.

What is the correct answer?
