Barriers to Effective Natural Resource Management,”

TBA

Writing Assignment #2 – [50 points] Be sure to save a copy of your responses. Be sure to support your responses with evidence from the readings and/or web sites. Supply a reference list, if necessary. I have indicated approximate page lengths to guide your responses. Whew… Good luck! Double Space
Instructions – Double Space all your work:
1. [approximately ½ - 1 pg.] From the article (Week 2), “Barriers to Effective Natural Resource Management,”
a. Briefly describe the barriers that were identified as impediments to effective planning.
b. Summarize what steps/methods/ideas you think is most useful to others working with natural resources or the public sector in this paper.

2. [approximately ½ -1 pg.] Aside from not listening, why does communication often fail? Imagine that you have a group of 9 people working on a project. Each of your team members comes from a different natural resource background. In other words, the skills, knowledge, education and training – are all from different fields. What can you as a team leader do to ensure that all members of this group are able to benefit from each other’s background and diverse skills?
3. [approximately 1/2 pg.] How important should the values of the public be for natural resource managers – that is, should the values of the public play a large role, small role, or no role? You can consider (but don’t limit it to) the issues in Saving Eden Creek and/or The Miracle at Bridge Creek or the Georgia Aquarium.
4. Create 1 or 2 target statements based on your situation statement from your Writing Assignment 1, please pick one of those and create 3 pathways (that’s the how are you going to do it part) to improve your issue or problem. The target statement is the “what” to fix, the pathways are the “how to fix it” part.
So here is an example if your preferred target statement is: Reduce pollution on the Willamette River by 33% by the year 2015 (but don’t use these for your assignment).
Potential pathways: 1) Create a lottery system for recreational users (boating, fishing, swimming, etc) to reduce the number of people using the river each year.
2) Build an ultra filtration system that spans the width of the river that continually cleans the water and does not harm the fish or other wildlife or people, that runs on air and produces clean water and pure air
3) Create a policy that in most sections of the Willamette River, no recreational and/or agricultural use is allowed.
For one of your pathways – think out of the box (extraordinary, extreme, innovative).
