conflicting philosophies of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois

We will write papers on two historical “debates”: one on the conflicting philosophies of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, and the other on Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. For each debate you will write a brief (500 word minimum) position paper in which you summarize the dispute and state your own position on it.

For your source materials, use the readings in the syllabus and assignment guide only. All sources must be cited within the paper and listed in a Works Cited in MLA format. (See “Notes on Sources” below for more info.)

NOTE: All papers should contain at least one direct quote from each man discussed. Quotes should be brief—preferably no more than one sentence.

Regardless of which side of the debate you favor, you must read the materials for each subject. For example, for the Booker T/WEB debate, read both of the book’s selections by Booker T. Washington and the online excerpt by W.E.B. DuBois. As you read, make note of each man’s arguments, his reasoning, and support.

In your paper, begin with a statement of just a few sentences that sums up the essence of the debate between the two men—in other words, what is it that they disagree on? In the next paragraph or two, citing quotes and/or paraphrases from the texts, state specific points of disagreement. In the last paragraph, state your own position on the debate, along with a brief summation of your reasoning. DO NOT include long biographical passages on the men—focus on their ideas.

In addition to your paper, don’t forget to participate in the Discussion Forum, which will serve as a sort of online debate with your fellow students.

Format: Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. MLA style, including Works Cited.

Length: 500 words. Provide word count at top right of first page.

Grade: 100 points, based on content, coherence, use of support, clear and grammatical writing, competent proofreading, and MLA style. Papers that are not proofread for errors will be returned for a rewrite with a 10 point deduction from the grade.

Due Dates:

Booker T/WEB paper – 10/4*

MLK/Malcolm X paper – 11/8*

  • Submit electronically to appropriate eCourseware dropbox by 11:59 pm. Late papers may be submitted to the dropboax, but they will be flagged by eCourseware and points will be deducted. The dropbox will be closed to submissions two weeks after the due date.

NOTES ON SOURCES FOR BTW/WEB PAPERS

Use only the sources provided in the book. Again, these are not biographical papers, so do not focus on the men’s lives, but rather what they said on the issues.

In-Text Citation Example:

The moral of the story was “Cast down your bucket where you are” (Washington 573).

Works Cited Examples:

If you use material from the introduction, cite it like this:

Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Valeria A. Smith.
