Scientific Method and Plagiarism

Module 1 Discussion: Scientific Method and Plagiarism

Overview
Throughout this course you will be doing laboratory experiments that help reinforce the concepts learned in the chapters. In those experiments you will collect data and analyze the results. The validity of scientific results relies on 1) the proper use of the scientific method 2) a reliable assessment of the uncertainty of the measurements and 3) the understanding that the work presented by the scientist was original and not copied from another scientist.  In this discussion we will focus on each of these areas and discuss why they are important to the scientific process.
Instructions
For this discussion, complete the following tasks and answer the questions related to them:
1. Research the scientific method. In your response post, define the scientific method and explain how it enables data to be collected and trusted.
2. Do the tutorial Measurement and Uncertainty and then read the article “Getting the Measure of Uncertainty”. After completing the tutorial and reading the article, briefly summarize the article and explain why it is important to determine uncertainty in scientific measurements.
3. Finally, read the article “Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in the Digital Age”. Comment on a part of the article that you found particularly relevant. Explain what plagiarism means, why it is important in science that work not be plagiarized, and what you think the penalty for plagiarism in this course should be.

Susan Brownmiller’s “Let’s Put Pornography Back in the Closet” 2. Stuart D. Bykofsky’s “No Heart for the Homeless” 3. Gerard Jones’s “Violent Media is Good for Kids” 4. S. Taylor and A. Taylor’s “Is it Possible to be a Conscientious Meat Eater?” 5. James Q. Wilson’s “Just Take Away Their Guns”

Objective: Write a 3-4 page original essay in MLA style that begins with an objective 150-word or less summary of the argument, analyzes the author’s use of rhetorical strategies, and illustrates, with consideration given to the rhetorical situation,  how these choices contribute to the overall effectiveness of the argument.

Essays you may choose from (all on Canvas under Files):  1.

What you should include: - An objective 150-word or less summary of the author’s argument (this can be set off from the rest of the text or simply appear as the first paragraph), which shows the reader that you understand the argument and can explain it concisely.
- A thesis statement that reveals the strategies you intend to focus on, the audience the author is targeting, the author’s purpose and thesis, and your own judgment of the effectiveness of the argument. A possible template you might use is: “(The
author), in (the title), uses (these tools) to successfully/unsuccessfully (the purpose) (the audience) that (the argument)” or “(The author) uses (these tools) to successfully/unsuccessfully (the purpose) (the audience) that (the argument), but his/her use of (these tools) keeps the argument from being successful/unsuccessful as a whole.”
- A critical analysis of the author’s rhetorical choices and an illustration of how these choices contribute to the overall effectiveness of the argument. Your analysis should provide specific evidence from the text (cited by paragraph) and demonstrate awareness of the rhetorical situation.

What you should avoid: - Using outside sources for the analysis (it should be entirely your own). If you need to do research for purposes of understanding time, place, and environment, cite any sources both within the text and on a separate Works Cited page.  - Response to the topic. You should be analyzing the author’s use of strategies, not
arguing for/against his or her main point. - An analysis limited to a discussion of ethos, pathos, and logos or a simple paraphrase of the article versus a critical analysis.

Before you begin:

Take time to understand the rhetorical situation. Ask yourself the following questions. Who is the author? What is the message? What audience does your author seem to target? What is the author’s purpose in writing the piece? Is there more than one purpose? Does the purpose shift at all throughout the piece? What are the time, place, and environment surrounding this moment of communication?

Strategies to consider (although you are not limited to these):

*Thesis (Does the author state the thesis explicitly or implicitly? Where is it placed in the text? What effect do these choices have on the overall argument? Does he/she consider all relevant factors? Does he/she omit any points you think should be discussed?)

*Persona/voice (What persona/voice does the author adopt? How effective is it in relation to the topic and the audience?)

*Tone (What tone has the author set and how did he/she establish that tone? Does this tone help or hinder the argument?)

*Methods of argument (Does the author use any methods such as analogy, cause-and-effect, description, narration, illustration, comparison and contrast, definition, etc., and how effective are they in getting the argument across?)

*Appeals [Does he/she appeal to reason, to emotion, or both? Does he/she use statistics and are they interpreted fairly? Does he/she quote authorities and are those chosen carefully? Has the author made his/her authority clear through demonstrating obvious good character/knowledge of the subject (ethos)]?

*Elements of style [Does the author use stylistic elements such as fallacies, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, irony, etc.), repetition, diction, rhetorical questions, etc., and what effect do they have on the argument?]

*Organization of the text (Does the organization of the piece have any effect on the argument? Does the form complement the content? What effect does it have, and does it aid or hinder the author’s intention?)

You are a member of the Board of an Australian Company

You are a member of the Board of an Australian Company. Your office is expanding overseas and you need to prepare one of your employees to take up the role of General Manager for that country. One obvious form or preparation for an overseas job is learning about the local culture of your new location. This is exactly what we will do: The reports will be in a business presentation type format.
Typically such reports focus on countries and may include any specific cultural space (country, region, city, etc.)
The report format and relevant issues to discuss include the following:
I. Title Page – Your company and target country
II. The Company– Brief description of your company and the key products it sells
III. Formal Institution Analysis - Specifics of the political, economic, technological, and legal environment of the target country, as relevant including corruption and how to deal with government interference.
IV. Informal Institutions Analysis – A general description of the target country and culture in the country (e.g., cultural dimensions, religion and beliefs, language, etc.)
A. How informal norms in society will affect your day to day role.
B. Management practices prevalent in this culture (e.g., how are employees hired? promoted? motivated?)
C. Any other interesting and specific details that provide a good understanding of “how things work”
V. The Expatriate - Skills and abilities that potential expatriates need in order to be successful in this culture
VI. Recommendation – Should we or should we not open up here? Summarise your justification.
No country will be assigned to more than 1 person.  This way we will cover a wide range of cultures – knowledge from multiple cultures contributes to the development of cultural intelligence.

MARKING CRITERIA

A Marking Rubric is available online.
Individual Weightings for the final paper are as follows:

  • Project Appendix A handout (legal_ts_projectappendixa)
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
You will gain an understanding of the aspects involved in the conception, enforcement, and implementation of security policies. You will also gain insight to risk analysis and will learn how to respond to any given situation that might arise from a violation of those security policies.
Deliverables
Scenario
You are member of the IT Staff for Premier College. Recently, your college has received a notice from the Department of Education about an investigation of your college based on the state-specific testing and compliance procedures. The Department of Education has sent a Litigation Hold Notice wherein they have asked all college staff and administrators of the college to preserve all relevant documents, records, data, contracts (regardless of its location or medium), and correspondence notes.
To understand the litigation hold notice received from the Department of Education, refer to the documents entitled “Project Litigation Hold Notice“ (legal_ts_projectlitigationholdnotice) and “Project Appendix A” (legal_ts_projectappendixa). As a reminder, this Litigation Hold preservation obligation supersedes any existing statutory or regulatory document retention period or destructive schedule. The determination of what information may be potentially relevant is based upon content and substance and generally does not depend on the type of medium in which the information exists.
The information requested may exist in various forms, including paper records, handwritten notes, telephone log entries, e-mail, and other electronic communications (including voicemail), word processing documents (including drafts, spreadsheets, databases, and calendars), telephone logs, electronic address books, smartphones, Internet usage files, systems manuals, and network access information in their original format.
All electronically stored information (ESI) should be preserved in its originally created, or “native” format, along with related metadata. Relevant backup tapes and all indexes for those tapes should also be preserved. Reasonably accessible information must also be preserved, because such sources will need to be identified under compelling circumstances, and may need to be produced. If you have any doubts as to whether specific information is responsive, err on the side of preserving that information.
Tasks
After receiving the Litigation Hold Notice, your next task is to do the following:
  1. Create a document retention policy for your College that complies with all state and Federal regulations. (Minimum 3 pages)
  2. Create a Litigation Hold Notice similar to the one provided to you in the Project Litigation Hold Notice handout. (Minimum 2 pages)
  3. Create a checklist of procedures that must be followed in order to comply with the Litigation Hold Notice. (Expected output is 2-3 pages)
  4. Prepare a summary of all your findings. (3-5 pages expected)
Submission Requirements
Submit your answer in a Microsoft Word document in a minimum of 10 pages of content, not including a cover page and references.
