Real World Scenarios: Midas and Genoa Ford, Same Service but Not Competitors
A typical Midas shop and the service center at a dealership such as Genoa Ford provide the same service, but are they really competitors? Each has adopted different strategies and tailored their operations to fit those strategies.
Midas is in the automotive repair business. Its strategy is to provide a narrow range of services at low cost. National advertising is used todevelop wide geographical coverage. The company is not a full service repair shop, but concentrates on muffler repair, brakes, and shockabsorbers. It is successful because it quickly delivers quality services at low cost. How are operations important to Midas?
  1. Limited service requires a limited inventory that allows convenient storage close to where materials are needed to perform operations.
  2. Multiple shops and limited service permit careful engineering of the necessary hand tools and work procedures. These special tools andwork procedures make shop employees more efficient. Midas can apply the same tools and methods to a large number of shops, ensuringthat initial engineering costs are easily covered.
  3. Because employees have few variations in service, they learn how to perform these jobs more quickly.
  4. Workers’ skill levels and knowledge requirements focus on a limited area of service so they quickly become experts in a particular area.
As part of a Ford dealership, Genoa Ford’s Service Center provides a full line of automotive repairs. In contrast to Midas, this serviceoperation competes without advertising or national appeal. It also has a different operating strategy. In order to maintain the dealership,Genoa Ford must be able to satisfy a wide variety of customer needs. It offers transmission work, body work, engine repairs, and othertasks in addition to working on brakes, shocks, and mufflers as Midas does. Genoa Ford designs its operations to match its objectives.
  1. The facility is adaptable to changing needs. For example, on one day, a single repair stall may be used to wash a new car, repair a doorlock, fix an air conditioning leak, or tune an engine.
  2. Genoa Ford has more tools than a specialist like Midas does because Genoa Ford offers a greater variety of jobs.
  3. There is some job specialization among workers. All employees will not be able to do everything, but employees still need a wide range ofskills because Genoa Ford does not have enough of one particular job to allow personnel to specialize. Cross-training is necessary.
  4. The workers’ skill levels and pay rates are higher than workers at Midas.
  5. A significant inventory of many different parts is maintained. These parts are physically separated from the repair stalls and controlled byspecialists in parts.
As a result of its strategy, Genoa Ford has higher costs and charges higher prices than Midas does for comparable work. When a car needsroutine exhaust system work, it can be taken to a national chain such as Midas. Generalists, such as Genoa Ford, can complete moredifficult jobs and repair work that is paid for by Ford as part of its new car warrantee program.

Read the “Memorial Hospital” case study in Chapter 4 of your text. In a three page paper, respond to the guided response below.
Discuss ways that a hospital might measure quality. Be sure to explain your reasoning. Explain the potential costs and failures of quality for Memorial Hospital and discuss how each can be measured. Discuss ideas or techniques from TQM that Janice could use to help Memorial focus on providing quality health care. Analyze the methods Memorial could use to assess the quality of health care it is providing.
    Memorial Hospital
Memorial Hospital is a privately owned 600-bed facility. The hospital provides a broad range of health care services, including completelaboratory and X-ray facilities, an emergency room, an intensive care unit, a cardiac care unit, and a psychiatric ward. Most of these services areprovided by several other hospitals in the metropolitan area. Memorial has purposely avoided getting involved in any specialized fields ofmedicine or obtaining very specialized diagnostic equipment because it was felt that such services would not be cost-effective. The GeneralHospital, located only a few miles from Memorial, is affiliated with the local School of Medicine and offers up-to-date services in thosespecialized areas. Instead of trying to compete with General Hospital to provide special services, Memorial Hospital has concentrated on offeringhigh-quality general health care at an affordable price. Compared with the much larger General Hospital, Memorial stresses close personalattention to each patient from a nursing staff that cares about its work. In fact, the hospital has begun to place ads in newspapers and ontelevision, stressing its patient-oriented care.
However, the hospital’s administrator, Janice Fry, is concerned about whether the hospital can really deliver on its promises, and worries thatfailure to provide the level of health care patients expect could drive patients away. Janice met recently with the hospital’s managerial personnelto discuss her concerns. The meeting raised some questions about how the hospital’s quality of health care could be assured. Jessica Tu,director of nursing, raised the question, “How do we measure the quality of health care? Do we give patients a questionnaire when they leave,asking if they were happy here? That does not seem to answer the question because we could make a patient happy, but give them lousyhealth care.” Several other questions were asked concerning the hospital’s efforts to keep costs down. Some people were concerned that anemphasis on costs would be detrimental to quality. They argued that when a person’s life is at stake, costs should not be of concern.

Ben Davis had just completed an intensive course in Statistical Thinking for Business Improvement, which was offered to all employees of a large health maintenance organization.

Ben Davis had just completed an intensive course in Statistical Thinking for Business Improvement, which was offered to all employees of a large health maintenance organization. There was no time to celebrate, however, because he was already under a lot of pressure. Ben works as a pharmacist’s assistant in the HMO’s pharmacy, and his manager, Juan de Pacotilla, was about to be fired. Juan’s dismissal appeared to be imminent due to numerous complaints and even a few lawsuits over inaccurate prescriptions. Juan now was asking Ben for his assistance in trying to resolve the problem, preferably yesterday!
“Ben, I really need your help! If I can’t show some major improvement or at least a solid plan by next month, I’m history.” “I’ll be glad to help, Juan, but what can I do? I’m just a pharmacist’s assistant.” “I don’t care what your job title is; I think you’re just the person who can get this done. I realize I’ve been too far removed from day-to-day operations in the pharmacy, but you work there every day. You’re in a much better position to find out how to fix the problem. Just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.” “But what about the statistical consultant you hired to analyze the data on inaccurate prescriptions?” “Ben, to be honest, I’m really disappointed with that guy. He has spent two weeks trying to come up with a new modeling approach to predict weekly inaccurate prescriptions. I tried to explain to him that I don’t want to predict the mistakes, I want to eliminate them! I don’t think I got through, however, because he said we need a month of additional data to verify the model, and then he can apply a new method he just read about in a journal to identify ‘change points in the time series,’ whatever that means. But get this, he will only identify the change points and send me a list; he says it’s my job to figure out what they mean and how to respond. I don’t know much about statistics — the only thing I remember from my course in college is that it was the worst course I ever took– but I’m becoming convinced that it actually doesn’t have much to offer in solving real problems. You’ve just gone through this statistical thinking course, though, so maybe you can see something I can’t. To me, statistical thinking sounds like an oxymoron. I realize it’s a long shot, but I was hoping you could use this as the project you need to officially complete the course.”
“I see your point, Juan. I felt the same way, too. This course was interesting, though, because it didn’t focus on crunching numbers. I have some ideas about how we can approach making improvements in prescription accuracy, and I think this would be a great project. We may not be able to solve it ourselves, however. As you know, there is a lot of finger-pointing going on; the pharmacists blame sloppy handwriting and incomplete instructions from doctors for the problem; doctors blame pharmacy assistants like me who actually do most of the computer entry of the prescriptions, claiming that we are incompetent; and the assistants tend to blame the pharmacists for assuming too much about our knowledge of medical terminology, brand names, known drug interactions, and so on.” “It sounds like there’s no hope, Ben!”
“I wouldn’t say that at all, Juan. It’s just that there may be no quick fix we can do by ourselves in the pharmacy. Let me explain how I’m thinking about this and how I would propose attacking the problem using what I just learned in the statistical thinking course.”

Assuming the role of Ben Davis, write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you apply the approach discussed in the textbook to this problem. You’ll have to make some assumptions about the processes used by the HMO pharmacy. Also, please use the Internet and / or Library to research articles on common problems or errors that pharmacies face. Your paper should address the following points: 1.
