Albert Einstein said, "Imagination ... is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
This quote is in the inspiration for this paper assignment. You do not have to write a long research essay but simply a short exploratory one that samples and evaluates the sources on a topic that is within the temporal and spatial boundaries of this class.
Please select a topic that really engages your imagination. Feel free to pick one related to your current choice for an occupation, or your leisure and philosophical interests. In short, reflect upon what topic you would really like to learn more about but have never been able to do fully? After you have done so please take the following steps:
Write a paragraph or so on why this topic is really fascinating for you. By doing so you will develop a thesis, a point of view that allows you to ask questions about the sources you find.
Then explore the sources on the topic. Be sure to check out the online data base of academic journals to which our library has subscribed, JSTOR, also check out Google Scholar, Google Books, and Amazon.Com. It is not difficult today to find quite quickly the most important and recent sources on virtually all topic. Choose the ones that are the most fully based on research and contain references (especially footnotes) to support their positions.
Briefly evaluate the four or five best sources and tell why they have helped illuminate your topic of interest.
Then conclude with a paragraph of so on why this topic is important in the larger scope of American history. Overall this essay should not be more than five or six double-spaced pages. Quality is more important than quantity. Remember you are not writing a research essay but evaluating a topic for a possible research essay that you then might undertake at a four-year university.
As far as format and style, please follow The Chicago Manual of Style that can be found easily on the Internet.
