A “nice synopsis” would include a basic description of the book you are reviewing that illuminates briefly the main point(s) or thesis of the work, and the supporting arguments.   This is NOT a chapter-by-chapter account of what the author said.   Consider this – if you had to summarize the overall message the author wanted to convey in a couple of sentences, what would it be?   THAT is the thesis of the book, and that is what I feel you should know.   In addition, a synopsis should include information regarding any fascinating details or research methodologies that made the work interesting or provocative.

A “general critique” would include an analysis of how successful the author was in conveying his/her argument – did the author support his/her thesis, did the argument make sense, etc.   General details of the book are also fair game – was it well written, easy to understand, etc.   In addition, I want to know if you liked the book, and please explain why or why not.  Simply saying “This book really sucked” is not acceptable – tell me why it sucked, and how it might have been more successful
