Do you feel at times that Spanish-speaking clients shy away from using their English no matter how good it is? What experience made you think this way?Do you find that Spanish-speaking clients are shy, intimidated, or afraid to use English?

Do you feel at times that Spanish-speaking clients shy away from using their English no matter how good it is? What experience made you think this way?Do you find that Spanish-speaking clients are shy, intimidated, or afraid to use English? What types of communication skills might you use that might help them to feel at ease? When in difficult situations relating to a language barrier, how did you feel? Did you get frustrated, angry or resort to pointing? How did the client react? How similar are your experiences to that of your classmates? How do you think the language barrier affects the quality and/or outcome of the care provided? Discussion #2 Reflect on experiences that you have had with Spanish-speaking friends, acquaintances, and/or patients in relation to time. What type of event was it? Was this a friend, a patient, a classmate, or someone else? When did you arrive? When did s/he arrive? If s/he was late, were you upset? Was an excuse given? How might your relationship with this individual affect whether or not s/he shows up on time? Now think about the norm in the United States in relation to time. When would you show up for the following events (early, on the dot, late)?: a. Doctor’s appointmentb. Classc. A friend’s birthday partyd. Meeting up with a friend for coffee Is it ever acceptable to show up late to any of the above events? How about early? Can you think of other circumstances where it might be acceptable to show up late? What do you think this might demonstrate about your culture? After your initial post, read your classmates’ posts. Do any of their comments surprise you? Does everyone agree? If not, what might this tell you about stereotypes? Do you think all Spanish-speakers show up late for social events all the time? Discussion #3 How does effective healthcare communication contribute to health equity? What programs and processes do you think need to be in place? Are you aware of specific programs in your respective community?
